The books I have selected will not only serve as mirrors (they will see themselves reflected) but also as windows (opportunities to learn about other cultures and languages other than their own) into their lives, community, and the world around them. These books will serve as mentor texts for reading comprehension skills and writing. They will also be utilized for independent reading The availability of culturally relevant, diverse, and inclusive books for my students will help them connect, engage, and broaden their cultural lens in their daily reading lives. And ultimately help them make reading and writing gains in all subject areas. We will use the books to drive our reading comprehension work, a springboard for social comprehension, writing opportunities in response to literature, and make book trailers for the whole school watch in hopes they will be able to see the mirrors and the windows themselves
