I teach in an urban school where all of my students receive free lunch. Most of them come from single parent homes or are being raised by a grandparent. The teaching staff showers our students with love and knowledge. My students don't have much in the way of material things, but I teach them that knowledge, good grades, and being a responsible citizen will help them pursue their dreams. So many of my students dream to go to college, but think they can't because they are not rich - as they say. I tell them that knowledge and excellent grades are their money into college. Their will to learn is what makes my job easy. The outside forces of their neighborhood is what makes my job tough. I am constantly doing home visits, checking to see why a student hasn't been in school for several days, calling case workers, tutoring for free on my lunch time, and making sure that my students are safe when they leave school. I am blessed to have them. Learning is their way out.
