So many of my students are artists, but I rarely give them opportunities to paint. After having to teach an art unit a while ago, I learned about the power of using images to communicate.
While I have students complete research papers and write essays in my class, for one of the projects in which they examine an American Problem, I'd like them to focus on themselves as the SOLUTION.
Many times, teenagers are told they are the problem, and if we empower them and help them to see themselves - through a self-portrait or symbolic object of themselves - as the solution, perhaps they will be able to shift their perspectives of themselves and see how important and significant they are in today's society. I am asking for paint, canvas, markers and other art supplies for this project.
