"Fractions are hard!" This is a common sentiment among children and adults. In order to avoid my students developing this same feeling they need to have a deep conceptual understanding of fractions. The lack of this understanding is typically what causes kids to stall out and struggle in later studies of fractions. Research shows that in order for anyone to be able to internalize new concepts they need repeated exposure to the concrete aspects. These fraction towers will help students have the opportunity to have exposure not only through visuals of fractions but also through tangible experiences. They will also allow students to physically manipulate fractions in order to compare them, put them in order, add, subtract and even multiply with them! These skills are fundamental in fields such as accounting, graphic design, engineering, chemistry, art, and cooking. Please help my kids to become strong mathematicians who have a deep understanding of fractions!
