I teach in an inner city, Title I middle school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast & lunch. We call our students scholars to help them develop a mindset of excellence & possibilities beyond where they are now. Too many of my students read multiple grade levels below where they should be. So, every scholar in our school starts their day in a class where we simply read good books!
In addition to their ELA classes, my struggling readers get an additional 45 minutes of individualized reading support that I want to make sure is fun, nurturing, supportive of their learning styles & that exposes them to text in various media formats. In my classroom all of my scholars struggle in their reading so establishing a respectful & encouraging atmosphere is crucial. My scholars dream of a future where they are successful. They need strong reading skills to get them there & they know that is what they need to learn. I cannot let even one of them give up believing they can
