In teaching middle school math, I find that many of my students, at times don't see the connection between math and the arts. So many times, one of them will say, "What do I need this for?" Words are simply not enough to convince that math is EVERYWHERE!
I want to show my students that math IS fun! The way I plan to do that is to use math skills on our Celebration Days. Three times a year, our students are rewarded with special workshops from which they can choose. My plan is to use the materials I'm asking for to show them that math is very much needed. For example, tye dying t-shirts takes following directions in a sequential order, as well as measuring. Making slime again, counts on students doing things in order and measuring correctly. Face painting will be about geometrical design and how math and art are truly partners. Having these supplies to offer the students creative activities will most assuredly show them upclose how much fun math is.
