The students love books, especially when they see some of their favorite characters or when they engage with graphic novels. This year, our school is adopting Reading Workshop, which stresses the importance of kids reading at their independent level for at least 25-30 minutes per day. All of the students are reading at least 1.5, and in some cases up to 3-4 years below grade level.
When my students see new graphic novels, they can't wait to come and take a look. Right now, my library has some, but not nearly enough, to captivate their interest and make sure they look forward to their independent reading time. This project will result in a huge infusion of graphic novels, which will support every student as they work to grow (at least) 1.5 years in reading this year.
