My school is located in a high poverty neighborhood in an urban setting. More than 90% of the students are Hispanic. 100% of our students receive both free breakfast and free lunch, and many students are on a supplemental food program for the weekends. About 40% of our students are learning English as a second language. I know that the after school hours are when my students are most at risk of being victims or perpetrators of crime. I also know participation in high quality extracurricular programs is more closely linked to higher SAT scores than any other single factor. Singing and performing in my chorus club gives students not just music knowledge but opportunities for socialization, connection with a teacher, and the ability to make something great together. By the end of the school year, my students are clamoring for solos. We perform next week and 12 students will have either a duet or solos (and we'll dance with our teddy bears).
