Students with Autism have a need for various sensory activities and materials that allow them to release stress and focus their energy on their daily tasks. Being in a low income school, my students do not receive adequate materials needed for their academic success because it does not qualify under the "typical" list for classroom needs. My students do not only need text books or paper and pencils as many others do, they need materials that will allow them to relax in stressful situations, or release any bottled up emotions in order to be able to move forward with their day.
Visual Aides are the foundation of our classroom. Through these we allow students to see what they might be having difficulties hearing. Visual schedules, a picture exchange communication system, among visual representation of every word in the classroom take many materials that may seem insignificant to many but crucial to us. In the classroom we need colored ink for the printer in order to show what these important visuals are, a laminating machine to make sure these visual aides remain strong for the students to come, and velcro in many instances in order to paste these where they are supposed to be.
A sensory center including kinetic sand and throw pillows will be in the classroom for the students to have a place to go when they need to remove themselves from a situation that is making them uncomfortable. As mentioned before, these items and the reasoning behind them may seem insignificant to many, but for our students with special needs these items are crucial in order to move on from one daily activity to the other. We truly need your support to turn our classroom into an appropriate learning environment for what is our future generation.
