I teach in a Title 1, low income school. It is difficult to get students to pass regular classes; let alone sign up for AP classes. I took over the AP Government program 2 years ago and have successfully grown it from 8 students to 65. Many of them do not understand the political process and think that they cannot make a difference, but overtime I have convinced many of them of the important of being civic minded and how ultimately they have the power to solve the poverty and violence of our community by voting and being active citizens. So many students have become interested that I am also fundraising to send 100 of them to the inauguration next January! The spark that has been lit in these students is amazing and just because they were born into a bad situation I don't believe they deserve to be stuck with unsubstantial resources, especially something as basic as a textbook.
