Surface area, slope and volume. These are three concepts that have to be mastered in 8th grade math. The concepts involve formulas that need to be memorized and the students also need to be able to apply the pre-algebra skills they are earning to these concepts. The manipulatives from this project will help my EC students be able to "touch" the math and have hands-on experiences and models to help them understand and learn the concepts. We will also be able to utilize the manipulatives when applying the concepts to complex multi-step word problems. Tangible models help students create mental models and accurately visualize and comprehend math concepts.
