I teach newcomer students, both newly arrived immigrants and those that have been in the US for a couple years. Although they are very resilient, many of my students have witnessed and/or experienced extreme violence in their home countries and during their journeys to the US, which many completed on their own. In addition to the challenges of being an adolescent, they are experiencing a new culture, often without their families, and trying to learn English. I believe all students should learn in a safe, engaging and caring classroom and that where you are born shouldn't affect the opportunities you have to thrive and become your best self. In my classroom, we value teamwork, learning from your mistakes, and not being afraid to try. One of my strengths as a teacher is fostering a trusting and supportive community among students, which is vital for both authentic learning and social-emotional learning.
