First grade is such a milestone for all children. In first grade students are starting their learning experience and setting their educational foundation and love for learning that will carry them throughout their academic life. Having that monumental year filled with lasting memories and positive academic achievements, will help encourage them to take risks, be more successful and eager to learn.
Many of my 28 students are from various socioeconomic backgrounds. My school is a high-needs status school with over 90% of our students qualifying for free and reduced lunch.
My classroom has a very diverse population, some students come from low-income households, several are ELL (English Language Learners) and there is a large population of students with special educational needs. For many of these children, being with their teacher and friends is the happiest and safest part of their day.
