Every year students struggle with measurement concepts and skills. Combining measurement with a life skill will give students purpose and meaning to these concepts. Students will use the serger sewing machine to create fashionable clothing (circle skirts, headbands, bowties, capes, etc.) they would showcase to the community and possibly the world. The finished product allows them to practice their sewing and math skills. This project would significantly help my students' understanding of these measurement concepts.
Learning about circumference, radius, and using a ruler will have a new meaning. Students will see their own ideas come to life and make something tangible for a project that cultivates an entrepreneurship for some and a life skill for all.
