My students have a wide range of disabilities that impact their ability to stay focused in class. They need weighted vests, Ergochairs, fidgets and other sensory item. Research has shown that many students benefit from using sensory strategies including weighted lap pads and vests, chewable items, and alternate seating options to improve attention, behavior, and self-regulation skills. Each student has different needs and may respond differently to the use of sensory tools and techniques.
Schools usually look to the Occupational Therapist to provide these sensory tools. Several tools or techniques need to be tried out before the right item or strategy is found for each child. My students need a "lending library" of supports to find what will work for them.
