I wasn't sure what to expect when I walked into my new classroom for the first time. As I examined the existing art materials, I discovered that I would be retooling the art program to make it relevant for today's learner. The highlights of the available materials were about 12 bottles of mostly-used tempera, a class set of almost-empty glue bottles, one box of clay, a never-used kiln, and a number of poorly-maintained pens and brushes. The hundreds of photocopied coloring sheets were overshadowed only by drawer after drawer full of broken crayons. I knew that I couldn't provide a quality art program with any of this.
The tools and materials provided by your donation will allow every child in my school to experience the visual arts in a way that they never have before. Through this project, every child will be able to build and decorate a ceramic project for what may be the very first time. They will explore and learn the materials and techniques of traditional arts from Africa, Asia, and South America. They will develop a strong understanding of color, line, form, texture, and so many other elements of art and design, and they will understand how these ideas work together by creating compositions themselves. My students will develop a visual vocabulary and a love for the fine arts, and they make their own place in art history!
This project will not end with this school year. It serves to lay a foundation that will affect the lives of these kids for years to come. Won't you partner with me and become the cornerstone of this incredible endeavor?
