The majority of my students live in the Bronx and are within walking distance from our school. They are all learning English as a second or a third language and some of them are new to the country. These students are six and seven years old and the thing they need most from me is affection. They are brilliant, sensitive and exited to be in school.
The thing I enjoy most about my job is seeing how supportive my students are to each other. For example, when I call on a student and they really do not know the answer, I allow them to "phone a friend." They put their hand up to their ear, miming that they are on the phone and then call on a classmate's raised hand to help them answer the question. The classmate that they called on then puts up their pretend phone to their ear and answers the question for the class. Seeing them work together and support each other's learning is the best part of my job.
