In today’s society being literate requires much more than just being able to read. In order to be both successful and marketable, people must be effective communicators and collaborators, technology literate, a critical thinker, and problem solvers. As a classroom teacher, my students are given multiple opportunities to engage in lessons that will expose them to 21st century literacy instruction. My students are constantly engaged in small groups where they are able to communicate and collaborate with each other discussing the specified standards and skill. One way I wish to enhance these activities would be to provide students with more hands on opportunities to effectively develop problem solving skills in reading and to understand not only what to learn but focus on their modalities and interest to enhance their engagement in the standards. Furthermore, the materials requested, like the "Think, Talk, Write Comprehension kit for example, will allow the students to discuss the passages with their peers, and also incorporate writing which also strengthens comprehension.
