My students need the basic materials of black paper, white pencils acetate, and scissors to create their own shadow puppets. The overhead projector and screen will be our 'theater.' Otis Elementary School students will use these materials to explore their ability in crafting a story, through creating, drawing, cutting, and animating characters on the overhead projector. Other students may accompany them with radio style sound effects or simple music making. These activities will be practiced carefully and rehearsed in and out of class. We will then invite families to come in and see our Shadow Puppet Plays. Some will be auto-biographical, some will be fantastical, all will be original creations displaying a student's imagination and ingenuity.
Your generous donation to our project will build confident, capable and creative students, proud to perform their puppet plays for parents and peers. All children are natural, creative story tellers. Some of my students do not yet have the mastery of language or the confidence in public speaking to 'tell' their stories, but they can create shadow characters and environments and 'show' their stories!
