My students need text and digital resources to support and grow their literacy skills. As students of history, they are tasked with reading, analyzing, and discussing different forms of text and media that help them to not only gain knowledge but also to become critical thinkers, a crucial skill as students and as adults. It's through these mediums, that I hope to instill a love of life-long learning and discovery in all students.
In order to access texts, students need both context and vocabulary. English language learners and students with special needed will use the text sets as part of guided reading and independent reading to build the background knowledge needed to better access texts, as well aquire academic vocabulary needed to deeply engage. BrainPop will be used during mini lessons, both small group and whole class, to set the stage for learning and give students necessary background information in a concise and engaging way. It allows students to set the pace and rewatch parts as needed to feel confident in their understand of new content and concepts. Flocabuary will be used as part of direct and engaging vocabulary instruction. Middle school students love music and movement, making the vocabulary aquisition process kinestetic is key.
