My classroom is very diverse, not only culturally but with interests too. That's what makes us such a great family, or so I tell my students. We all have something special to contribute and teach each other. My school is surrounded by agricultural fields and most students are bussed in from the surrounding neighborhoods. Slightly over half of our students are part of the free or reduced price lunch program. Many of my students have supportive parents and lots of experiences. However, I learned this year that most of my students have had little exposure to science. That is partly where my idea for this project began. I started the second day of school off with a Diet Coke and Mentos experiment and my students were amazed. They really want to learn more science this year and I believe that they will grow from this experience and remember it in years to come.
