Located outside of the nation’s capital, Northern Virginia has been identified as the most racial and ethnically diverse area in the nation (USA Today, 2014). With this rapid growth of immigrants, English Language Learners (ELLs) are the fastest growing student demographic in Alexandria City Public Schools, where students from up to 200 countries comprise our student population. The top three languages amongst ELLs spoken at our Elementary School are Spanish, Arabic and Amharic. Additional languages spoken include Sudanese, Creole, Chinese, Pashto, Urdo and Dari.
