I am blessed with three classes of 8th graders. Each class ranges from 20-33 students of varied reading levels. Many scholars are hungry for new reading materials, as they do not have access to any at home. Others, simply have not had much exposure to books or being read to, so they do not know what they like or what they don't like about reading.
My school has a superstar team of educators that are all on board with increasing the literacy of our students. Reading is required in our homerooms, and all subjects encourage reading as an important skill. We also realize that literacy equals knowledge, and knowledge gives opportunity to access. Without which, the vast majority of our students will end up without the chance to become positive contributors to our community and to society.
