Inspired by the 鈥淕enius Hour鈥 concept, our new multi-subject curriculum allows seniors to share a personal interest with younger students. Seniors will select a hobby or skill that they want to teach. Their end goal will be conducting a class or workshop with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. The project will involve a lot of planning and will expose students to many 鈥渟oft鈥 skills as well.
Once a student (or small group of students) decide on what passion they wish to share, they first need to create a proposal. The proposal includes objectives, goals, learning strategies, and a supply budget. Seniors also need to come up with a 鈥減itch鈥 to attract Middle School participates. Other components include interacting with adults such as the principals and custodians, filling out the proper school forms, and completing a final evaluation.
Some of the soft skills that the seniors will practice are appropriate language and dress, asking for help when the answer isn鈥檛 on the internet, and interpersonal communication (between multiple age levels).
This project is a collaborative effort by the 12th grade English and Social Studies departments. We had a trial run during the Fall Semester and it was very successful. Both the seniors and their Middle School 鈥渟tudents鈥 had a great learning experience.
Many of the mini-classes require art and science materials that we do not have. (We can budget for them for next year, but we came up with this after the 2017-18 budget was completed.) By funding this project, you are giving us the supplies we need to make this new project a reality.
Our students have a history of helping their local community; this project will allow them to give back to their school community, and gain valuable skills at the same time.
