I am the Science Department Chair and MakerSpace Coordinator at Girls Academic Leadership Academy (GALA) in Los Angeles. We are the first all-girls public STEM school in the state of California and our success will hopefully allow similar programs to be created to support student need. In spite of socioeconomic barriers, my students work to meet rigorous standards and prepare for admission to college upon graduation. I believe that using a student-centered, hands-on approach to teaching science leads to students learning valuable critical thinking and problem solving skills that will follow them once they leave my classroom.
