Imagine over 180 Jr. High students going in and out of your classroom every day. Some of you just cringed, but I celebrate these interesting, creative, and capable students every day. Most of my students range between 14-15 years old with another handful being a year or two younger.
Each one arrives at my door with their own struggles, hopes, and goals. Some are tired from long nights of homework or practices; some even have jobs. Some arrive anxious for something exciting, something with which they can really engage. All of them hope to be included and encouraged.
Each year, my students are matched up with a first or second grader for whom they will write an original book. It's one of the few writing projects in school that is completely real: real audience; original writing, authentic illustrations, and a publication deadline that involves a small child. My students have stepped up to the assignment each year and we're looking forward to attacking it again.
