The mission of our piano program is to provide children from low-income households the opportunity to have a performing arts education. We have 7 levels of piano courses, as well as courses in Accompanying and Piano Pedagogy. Our students range from 6th-12th grade, and are placed in a piano class based on skill level rather than age.
Our classes are mixed with piano majors and non piano majors (each student at our school applies for a major). We have students who have never learned an instrument, and students who have had private lessons. There are also students who own a piano, and those who need to practice at school.
Each class learns piano improvisation, piano technique, music reading, music theory, harmonization, and repertoire pieces.
Students perform in weekly quizzes, end-of-quarter exams, and spend the entire semester preparing for recitals (first year students perform in the second semester only).
