My students live and learn in one of the most impoverished areas of Memphis. Unfortunately, that is usually the only thing people know about my students. What people fail to see is that my classes are full of kids with hopes and dreams. People hear that the average reading level in my 10th grade room is a 5th grade level, and they assume that my students aren't motivated. That couldn't be further from the truth. For the majority of their education, my students have not had access to the same educational opportunities and resources as students in other parts of our city. In my classroom, I see young adults who desired to be recognized for their accomplishments and not labeled by the reputation of their neighborhood. Five days a week, my room is filled with students with the potential to change their community and eventually the world.
