My classroom is the Extend 1 class at our high school. There are 13 students in my class, ranging from 14 to 19 years old. Each student has a minimum of one moderate to severe disability. My students’ disabilities affect their physical, verbal, and intellectual abilities. Our class follows the Extended Content Standards of the Common Core. While we work on the typical academics, we also focus on functional life skills, vocational skills, and social skills, while addressing the goals on each student’s Individual Education Program. My students love to be at school, and work hard each and every day to learn something new.
We have 1,214 students, currently enrolled, in our high school. 51% of the students in our school receive free or reduced meals. 75% of my classroom qualifies for free or reduced meals. A large number of our school population comes from low income families, which classifies us as a Title 1 school.
