Each day my students gather on the carpet to read a text related to the standards we are working on for the unit. With your help, that text could be "Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot." Students will be actively engaged in reading this text (or the many others requested) as we uncover the history the book profoundly holds. Students will be able to do so much more than read a story to learn about history. With the books requested in this project, students will relate to characters, look for motives, and practice using context clues to solve questions we have about the text.
Having these texts integrates social studies into my reading curriculum, offering students a chance to experience history in a more engaging way all while they fine tune the reading skills they work on daily. Students will use stories to study unique happenings in each period of history and cultures they have never experienced in the the rural community the students live in. For example, "So Far From the Sea" uses a picture book to help my 5th grade students understand the effects of the Japanese Internment camps during World War II. "One Giant Leap" will introduce space exploration. "Sweet Music in Harlem" discusses the Jazz Age. Finally, "Towers Falling" detailing the events of September 11th from the eyes of a 5th grader not alive but touched deeply by the history altering attacks.
With the addition of these rich texts, students will be able to build upon their knowledge of reading and social studies built in the classroom to add to our fine arts focus as a school. Students will write poetry, pen stories and essays, compose readers theaters and music, and create artwork in response to the captivating history experienced.
