Allowing children the choice of flexible seating options in the classroom (as opposed to traditional seating only) has many benefits. It helps promote physical activity and social interaction amounts peers.
One benefit is that it promotes physical activity, which reduces the amount of sedentary periods, which has shown to improve overall health. Balancing on balls during small group instruction is one way in which flexible seating increases physical activity. The knobby balls will be partially inflated and placed in the bmilk crates to help with stability. During guided reading, guided math, or any other small group instruction, the children will have the option to use this type of seating while working at a table with a teacher. The options will be rotated daily so that every-other-day a child will get to use his/her choice of seating.
Another benefit of flexible seating is that it promotes collaboration amongst peers which helps improve social/emotional development. Lying on mats on the floor during writers' workshop gives children more opportunities to interact with their peers. Lying side-by-side, or facing each other, gives children more comfortable and relaxed opportunities to share their ideas with each other.
