All of my students are children with a diagnosis of Autism. They are not "Autistic Children." They are children first. They struggle with language and communication. They struggle with learning and accessing their curriculum. They struggle with their diets and their behaviors. All because our world is not set up for them. No one understands and no one knows why. But one thing we do know is that they enjoy computers especially Apple products. Maybe because of the graphics, the sound, or the animation. They can relate. They can enjoy. There are no demands or stressors added when they have access to technology and many times they need no instructions or lessons. They just know how to make it work. They understand how it works. And they can enjoy. Rhonda McEwen, an assistant professor running a study on students with Autism who used iPods within their classrooms stated, "with the iPod, for the first time, he was able to demonstrate that he did understand."
