Children don't see color, but I do.
Ninety percent of my students have beautiful black or brown skin but very few of our read alouds have characters that look like them. My hope is to build a more diverse classroom library, so they can see characters who allow them to feel empowered. It is my belief that young children learn through listening to stories, so what exactly am I teaching them if all of our books have white characters? My students need to see that their lives matter and one small way I can make that happen is by reading more diverse books to them.
