All of my students have developmental delays in the area of communication. In addition, they all need assistance in independent functioning such as knowing how to clean up toys, sort materials, and appropriately socialize with peers. That is why it is essential that I do my very best to expose them and teach them as much vocabulary as I can so that they can feel comfortable communicating their wants and needs to adults and peers.
One of the main ways I can communicate with my students is through visuals. They need bright color pictures that can help them understand language being spoken to them as well as help them relay a message.
I am requesting money for a color printer and ink. This will allow me to provide my students with visuals so that they can make sense of the world. For example, I will be able to print visuals for every area and toy available. With the color pictures printed they will have a better understanding of the different areas in our classroom. Students will also enjoy visuals that can help them sort toys appropriately into bins.
All round the room, I would like to have visuals with velcro that have important words that might be useful for students to grab and point to if they are non-verbal. For example, a visual for stop or help.
In addition, materials to communicate with some of my students who have speech and language impairments such as communication boards need to be printed in color as well.
