At our high risk and high need school, many of my students need more than just textbooks to learn about the world outside their local community. They come to my class ready to learn, sometimes hungry, and I provide for their basic needs so they can learn. I have students who have very little English speaking ability and are working very hard with their peers to learn both English and the skills taught in my 7th grade life science class. I also have advanced students who are ready to use inquiry skills and research. All of my students brighten up at the mention of being able to dissect animals. They enjoy the responsibility of having a class pet and the teamwork of activities in the lab or garden. The classroom has a small hydroponic unit and several soil containers growing lettuce at different times in order to be ready for a photosynthesis chromatography lab. The students eagerly check the growth daily.
