I do my best to give my students authentic experiences to help them improve their daily living skills on a weekly basis. In order for them to reach their highest level of independence, being able to make food for themselves is a crucial skill.
Although we are currently cooking once a week, our cooking opportunities are extremely limited because of the supplies that we have in the classroom. We are limited to microwave-only/no-bake recipes. The toaster oven and portable burner would broaden my students' experiences and allow me to teach essential cooking and cooking safety skills.
Every authentic experience I can provide for my students gives them an opportunity to develop essential skills as well as potentially open doors for new hobbies and interests that they can participate in after they leave the high school setting.
