Strong structure and routines are key for success during the Junior High School years. Providing students with the tools to be effective in class is essential to maintain focus on learning and less worrying about what they "forgot to bring to class".
The items are put in the zipper pouch or added to the binder with additional laminated pages and organized in such a way that the students can follow the "normal class routine" simply by flipping through the tabs following a table of contents. Everyone knows what we are going to do next, based simply on the table of contents of the binder. When work is completed, graded or returned it is placed in the appropriate sections of the binder so students can keep track of their work until it is cleaned out and saved at the end of the grading period.
I have purchased the materials listed, out of my pocket for all of my students so I know what I am asking families to provide.
We are requesting the contents in the zipper pouch which include highlighters for identifying different elements of a problem, pencils for completing work, red pens for identifying errors that need review, an eraser to clean up mistakes, rulers for completing graphs and charts, and dry erase markers to present details on how problems are solved. The binder is used as the central focus of the classroom.
Overwhelmingly, parents were appreciative that they did not have to provide for this class. With a glad heart, I invested in my families, with your help we can continue this as I make plans for another year. It is important to create strong routines from start, not having to wait for students to get their supplies.
