The North Carolina Battle of the Books competition gives my students an opportunity to read a diverse collection of books that takes them to places they have yet to experience. It is a jumping off point to a world of discovery; not just for books, but for the love of teamwork, attention to detail, and the spirit of competition. The text that I am asking for will deliver my students to far away places and help them discover the beauty of places closer to home.
The most rewarding aspects of Battle of Books is not winning, but the conversations and discussions it inspires across grade levels and schools. The award winning titles that my students would like to review will allow more children more access to stories that matter. As we prepare for our Battle of the Book competitions, that allows more room for students to appropriately plan and collaborate in a way that will make us competition ready. My students deserve the books that reflect what is already inside them- endless adventure.
