Our school is an AVID school. We start teaching in Kindergarten the importance of education and being prepared to go to college. My students are very excited about learning. They want to learn as much as possible. They learn best by working with the materials. The more they can get into their learning the stronger the retention becomes. They have learned to become problem solvers, ask questions and have even learned how and where to go and find the information they are looking for. They have learned this year that having a different answer does not mean you are wrong as long as you can justify it. It just means that you have found a different way to get to the answer. They have been very creative and eager to share their thinking in math. It has become a challenge to find a new way to get the answer. We have had to use many manipulatives that we have created on our own this year. Students keep those resources nearby and use them to help them solve math problems on a daily basis.
