When we draw, when we paint, when we make collages, when we do paper sculpture, when we plan future projects, we start with a piece of paper. Students use paper to learn concepts such as the color wheel, shading, and drawing in depth.
Art class should be a place where students are not afraid of making a mistake. Although we learn problem-solving skills that help conserve paper, sometimes they just need a new piece! I would like to be able to offer students a new piece of paper without having to worry about running out.
I want my students to know what type of paper is needed for each media, and to experience how much easier it is to erase, etc, when you are drawing on something besides typing paper.
Each year, we have an art show that is very popular with our parents. Each child chooses their favorite creation for the show. These are mounted on colorful construction paper and displayed: the paper frames set off the art and add to the festive look of our show. It is a great way to celebrate the student's hard work.
Art isn't the only place this paper will help. Often teachers send their students to my room to get paper they need for the classroom, especially construction paper. It would be wonderful to have what they need and be able to accommodate them.
