The students that I work with are in middle school, but they are reading on elementary and low elementary levels. This adds to the challenge of getting the students to read. The books that are on their reading level, can seem embarrassing for them to read, but books on their grade level can be to hard for them to comprehend and discuss. The Outsiders, Holes and One Crazy Summer have events take place that they deal with in their life. Therefore, they will enjoy reading these books. This will lead to a joy of reading, because they will be able to comprehend and discuss what they are read. One Crazy Summer will also give them the joy of success, in cognitive learning, because the events that happen in the book is real life for the students I work with.
The books that I have chosen will allow the students to identify with the characters and the experiences they have gone through. This will help with their comprehension and also push them to improve their reading level and cognitive skills through the discussions and activities we will participate with these books.
