My students are a diverse group of children. I teach reading and writing to about 70 4th and 5th grade students. There is a high percentage of children who are reading and writing below grade level. There are many children who are receiving Special Education services, ELL students, and students who speak other languages at home. I would love for this diversity to be reflected in the books they read.
Our school is a relatively small family friendly public elementary school in urban Seattle. We have a small group of committed parents, but the majority of them work full time and cannot provide volunteer help in the classrooms. Teachers are friendly, and many have been teaching at the school for several years. Our school has a high percentage of students with special needs. There is a culture of acceptance and understanding that all children are unique and special at the school.
