Kehinde Wiley is a contemporary historical painter and sculptor. He focuses his attention on the beauty of the subject he is painting. The subjects are black men and women, so their pose matches the historical photo with grace and power. Students will use Kehinde Wiley’s ideas of changing historical portraits into contemporary art by creating their own digital artwork and inserting themselves into their piece. (Since we are E-learning) They will dig into what makes them unique and we will discuss identity and how the pose they choose describes one or more layers of their identity. They will use the printer and cardstock to print the final portrait in color and we will have an artist statement describing what they learned about history, society, and themselves in doing this study. This will create a sense of safety in our own school community and learn to appreciate others' differences rather than reject them. SEL will be heavily embedded.
