I am excited for the start of the new school year, however I am also concerned with the safety of my 2nd grade students. Since I teach math and the students basically use math manipulatives everyday. The best way for them to learn is to learn through hands on. Covid-19 has given me concern as to if I have enough manipulatives for all 40 something of my students to use daily without having to stop teaching and sanitize between every group of students.
Since students will be working in pods or small groups and me having to distance each pod or group from one another I want to insure I have enough materials to use throughout each lesson, station and group of students I work with. Students normally come together on the group rug for a lesson and then I work with individuals or small group of students that need extra help. However this year they will come in pods or groups. No more than 5 students will receive the lesson at a time and the remainder of the students will be in their designated work areas.
I have two classes of 20-22 students that I teach and I want to make sure that I don't spend the majority of my class time each day trying to sanitize everything for the next group of kids, as this will take away from their learning time. The materials/manipulatives can be sanitized at the end of the day each day and will allow students to receive the maximum benefit from their learning time while in class.
