My students struggle with understanding and reading nonfiction text because of nonfiction text structures and vocabulary. The content of nonfiction text is often not engaging to students who struggle with reading. But students are very interested in the topic of the Titanic. It provides several learning opportunities and support many of the standards that fifth graders need to understand. This text and topic is both interesting and challenging.
Most of my students read below grade level. Because reading nonfiction text difficult for my students, it is equally difficult to get them to enjoy reading. Providing them with a topic they love will fuel a passion for reading.
