I am a speech therapist at a public school in a high need, special education school in Flushing, NY. Many of my students come from low income households. The students that I serve include students with autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, and other developmental disabilities. All of my students have their own unique personalities and needs. Many students are nonverbal or have minimal verbal skills. Many of my students are being taught to use alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) to express themselves and communication with their peers. They would greatly benefit from engaging with manipulatives/ toys and interacting in activities to promote their language production, comprehension, and social communication skills.
