When I think about one of my major goals as an educator and librarian, it is to help create responsible citizens who take care of each other and their world. And the best way that I can help form human beings who do good is to teach them empathy. This project will encourage and inspire students to talk a walk in someone else's shoes.
New books will be purchased that will help my students see the world through the eyes of those who may be different from them. These books will show different family structures, different religions, different cultures, different physical abilities, different financial situations, different ways of thinking, and different ways of living.
These books will also help diversify our collection and add additional choices to our library. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word as well as develop their empathy.
