Reading aloud is an important part of learning new vocabulary and content. When students have a book in their hands, it makes them more accountable to what they are learning, and reading about. I want to read aloud these rich stories to the class and have them follow along with their own book in hand. They will be able to make connections from what they hear to what they see in the text, they will be able to hear how a fluent reader sounds, and they will be able to better comprehend what has been read.
Think about when you read the first book from the Harry Potter series, or the Twilight series, or Lord of the Rings. Did reading the first book make you want to go out and get the next book, and the next? The books I've chosen are books that are the first in a series of books. I know that reading the first of these great books will create great interest in reading for these young readers who are just starting their way into reading chapter books. I've also chosen an entire set of the series for my classroom library so that students will be able to read through them throughout the year.
Thank you for considering my submission for this grant. My 3rd grade students will appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity.
