Second grade is when reading starts to come alive for many students, yet some are still struggling. Many of my students are ready to dive into the world of chapter books/novels yet some are very hesitant and lack confidence.
Students need guided practice with longer pieces of text to help build reading stamina. Together as a class we will approach chapter books piece by piece, doing activities that will teach various literature skills. As we read engaging, age appropriate chapter books, students will discover a love for stories that develop chapter after chapter. Reading these books as a class will help encourage students who are overwhelmed by the length of chapters books and aide in comprehension for all.
