My students come to our Literacy Room bounding with excitement and energy. I have students ranging from grades K-5 who are in need of extra supports to help them develop their language and reading skills. Our school is a Title I school and with that comes a diverse student population with a high percentage qualifying for Free/Reduced priced meals. Many of my students fall into this category.
In many ways, my students are no different than most children - they love looking at picture books, being read to and listening to stories. They also are learning to love reading. However, what they do lack, both in school and at home, is technology. Beginning with our youngest learners who are just starting to grasp letter names and sounds to our older students who are struggling to read fluently, today's technology gives children an opportunity to expand their learning in ways that adapt to their individual needs. This technology is out there, but my students do not have the means to access it.
